Stephen Karlson, who blogs at Cold Spring Shops, is an economics professor at Northern Illinois University. You can follow his thoughts and concerns here. A childhood friend also teaches there, in the history department.

My own thoughts: anger, sadness, sympathy, horror.... all jumbled together.

We are in the same boat, with the same responses: the daughter of one of my best friends is attending there as an undergrad (she's badly shaken by the reality sinking in, but otherwise fine). The daughter of another friend has just graduated from there, and was up visiting friends on campus just last weekend. And I have a couple of distant relatives still on staff, there, I think (unless they retired just recently. I don't hear regularly from that branch of the family, even though they're less than three hours away).

There really are no words, and yet journalists keep trying to wrap this up in them.
